Howie’s Tallit

Howie lives in Montana and wanted “his” mountain on his tallit. When he and his parents first asked me about making a mountain on his tallit, I thought “it’ll be a breeze. I’ve done lots of mountains before.” But Howie didn’t want any mountain; he wanted Lone Mountain, near his home, where he’s skied all his life, to be the subject of his tallit. He also wanted a sunset sky, and a tree with the names of his ancestors and those close to him subtly embroidered on the leaves. He also sent me a picture of a quilted star that one of his grandmothers had made, and wanted a copy of it on his tallit. When it was finished, it was not just stunning and totally unique, but very meaningful.
